How to Get to Blue Ice Cave: KEF, Roads and Tour Bases

How to get to Blue Ice Cave: start with the meeting point

The answer to how to get to Blue Ice Cave begins with your booking rather than a single cave address. Tours use different bases around Jökulsárlón, Hali and Skaftafell. These meeting points are not interchangeable. Save the exact location and arrival instructions for your chosen activity, then arrange the road journey to that base. The final glacier approach belongs to the guided tour, whether it involves a modified vehicle, walking or both.

Jökulsárlón and Fellsfjara lie on opposite sides of Ring Road 1. Skaftafell is another departure area, with product-specific meeting points. Use the Jökulsárlón tour page or the Skaftafell cave combinations to choose the activity before setting your destination. A general place name on a map is less useful than the actual meeting instructions for the booked departure.

Taxi and transfer from Keflavík Airport (KEF)

Keflavík Airport, KEF, is different from Reykjavík's domestic airport, RKV. Airport bus services connect KEF with the capital region, including a service to BSÍ; public bus options also serve the region. For a taxi or booked transfer, request a quote for your actual destination and luggage needs. Treat arrival in Reykjavík and travel onwards to the glacier region as separate stages when arranging connections.

If you choose a tour departing from Reykjavík, reach its offered city pickup point independently. A city pickup should not be read as airport collection. Allow for landing formalities, the airport journey and the time needed to find your pickup location. For a two-day package, the Reykjavík departure guide explains the included overnight stay and breakfast. It is an alternative to self-driving to a local tour, rather than an airport transfer to a cave.

Travel from Reykjavík

This two-day trip starts with pickup in Reykjavík and travels by minibus.

Travel from Reykjavík with an overnight stay

The two-day minibus journey with Reykjavík pickup is an alternative to driving to the glacier base; it includes accommodation, breakfast and glacier equipment.

Car rental and parking

Rental cars are available at KEF. Choose a vehicle and winter equipment suitable for the road journey you intend to make, and read the rental terms for the intended use. Your destination is the booked meeting point. A super-Jeep transfer included in an activity does not allow you to continue along glacier tracks in a rental car. Off-road driving is generally prohibited, and poor road conditions are a reason to change plans rather than drive around the road.

Parking and the guided activity are separate costs unless your selected product states otherwise. At the tariff checked on 5 November 2026, the park's regional fee for a car with up to five seats was 1,110 ISK per vehicle. Payment covers the calendar day until midnight; a further paid park-service zone on the same day receives a 50 percent reduction after the earlier payment. Read the instructions at the parking area and use the appropriate vehicle category.

Public buses and onward connections

Route 52 serves Reykjavík to Höfn following the route reorganisation effective from 1 January 2026. Consult the timetable for your travel date, relevant stop and onward connection before choosing a cave departure. An intercity bus journey and a local guided activity are separate bookings. Do not build the day around an assumed same-day return after the tour or an automatic connection from an airport service.

Route 55 links KEF with the capital region, with the endpoint depending on the service. Check the actual journey rather than treating every departure as a direct connection to your onward bus. Debit or credit card, cash and countryside bus cards are payment methods on countryside services. Keep enough flexibility for a missed connection and consider an overnight base near the activity when the timetable does not fit your chosen start.

Winter roads and the final guided approach

Before every drive, check road.is or umferdin.is for road information, vedur.is for weather and warnings, and SafeTravel.is for travel advice. Conditions can change rapidly. Winter equipment, clear windows and lights, spacing and time in reserve matter; four-wheel drive does not prevent sliding. Change or cancel a road plan when conditions make it unsuitable instead of treating a booking time as a reason to continue.

Enter glaciers and ice caves only with a certified glacier guide. Crevasses, meltwater and roof instability remain hazards in winter. Reaching the car park is therefore the start of the activity arrangements, not permission to find a cave alone. Keep warm waterproof clothing and firm footwear ready for the guided section. The safety guide separates your own clothing from product-specific equipment and explains why the day's route may differ from a photograph.

Planning questions

Can I drive a rental car to the cave entrance?

Drive to your booked meeting point and join the guided glacier approach there.

Is KEF the same as RKV?

No. Keflavík Airport is KEF; RKV is Reykjavík’s domestic airport.

Can I rely on a same-day bus return?

Match the current timetable to the tour start and finish, and plan an overnight stay when connections do not fit.
